Why This Scholarship Matters
Many students have the talent, but lack support. This scholarship helps those who are serious about leading change in South Africa. It rewards students who are strong in class and active outside of it. If you believe in fairness, service, and building a better country, this is for you.
Who Can Apply
This award is only for students studying at UCT. To apply, you must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be in the last two years of your degree
- Have a GPA above 60% with no failed modules
- Come from a household earning less than R1.2 million per year
Students from any UCT faculty may apply. Postgraduate students are not allowed.
If you already get funding, you can still apply. But your total support must not go beyond UCT’s approved cost of study.
About the Scholarship
This award was started by Professor Klaus-Jürgen Bathe. He believes South Africa needs smart, caring leaders who will serve others. The UCT Funding Office will first review your form and letter. Then they will share it with Professor Bathe, who helps choose the winners.
What You Will Receive
This scholarship gives up to R120,000 each year. It helps cover tuition, books, rent, and other study costs. If your marks stay good, you can get it again next year.
This is more than just money. It shows that others believe in your future and your ability to lead and make a difference.
What the Reviewers Look For
This is not just about marks. The team also checks if you have been a leader. You must show that you helped others or made a difference in your school or community.
Your story matters a lot. Only clear and honest applications will be picked. If you are chosen, you will be contacted. If not, there will be no reply
How to Apply For the Scholarship
To apply, write a two-page motivation letter. Explain your goals, your values, and your work outside of class. You must show that you are ready to grow and lead.
In your letter, answer questions like:
- What clubs, groups, or service projects have you joined?
- What did you do as a leader, and what impact did it have?
- What is your biggest goal in life, and why does it matter?
